project05. Golf cabrioret  classic line

This is my companion that I purchased after falling in love with the design.

The initial design was by genius car designer Giugiaro in 1974. The Golf I Cabriolet was sold until the 1990’s as there were circumstances preventing the Golf II from being offered in the Cabriolet model. Of those sold, the Golf Cabriolet Classic Line was offered as a limited edition of just 500 cars in Japan in 1991 and it is still a popular car with many fans.

It gained popularity with its luxurious electric convertible top and exclusive leather seats, rare for the time, as well as its exclusive color schemes. In addition to its functionality as a cabriolet, the design with the top closed is outstanding, making it a classic Karmann design.

As it is a car from thirty years ago, it is obviously not as convenient as cars of today. But there is something indescribable when stepping into the car and grabbing hold of the steering wheel. Truth be told, it requires physical strength and financial resources to maintain, but as a designer myself, I cannot let this car go. I welcome it when people see the car out on the town and wonder what kind of a person is behind the wheel.
I’m sure that the people who choose this car and care for it long term have noticed the excellence of its design. Is it just a car that ages through the years, or is it a car loved as a vintage automobile? That is the value of the Golf family of cars.
